Question by : I have very bad back pain and cannot sleep please help with some tips or sugestions?
I’m a young teenager and one of my parents car was rear ended a year ago. I got very bad whip lash on my back, neck and knees ( knees also had damaged cartlidge) (oh and i was wearing my seatbelt) I had weeks and weeks of physio therapy but didn’t do any good I’m in a huge amount of pain and I can’t sleep at all! I haven’t slept in over two days so if you have any tips or suggestions to help me it would be great thanks

You need an MRI to check the discs in your back for herniation. You may be feeling sciatic pain if there’s pain at the top of your butt towards the side (either one side or both) or if you have pain traveling down your leg or into your low abdomen area. You really need an MRI and a doctor should absolutely be checking for things such as this, especially after a car accident. And don’t let any doctor lie to you, an X-ray and CT scan CANNOT show the discs and spinal cord nearly as well as an MRI. See an orthopedist and demand an MRI scan of the lumbar spine. (lower back).

Ibuprofen works. KO u and relax you. But you’ll have to be with an adult to get it. I know how you feel I had an accident 3 yrs ago when I was 16 and though seatbelts save lifes they sure leave a huge bruce.

Sometimes the old fashion remedies work best. Try sleeping on a firm mattress with a pillow between your knees/legs. Establish a set routine for sleeping. Don’t drink or eat foods high in carbs or caffeine before bedtime. Drink warm milk or soothing decaf tea. Often NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs) help, but should be taken with something to eat to avoid stomach upset. Usually it takes more than one dose if you have chronic pain. Avoid prescription pain medication or sleeping pills; they just get you hooked and dependent and the need increases.
