chrismazz.com – If you have low back pain after sitting long at work, in a car, in a plane, in a lounge chair (hopefully on a beach) or if you have been doing extra cardio on a bike (spinning) or treadmill, try these hip flexor stretches. I get low back pain after only 45- 60 minutes of sitting especially during a car or plane ride and these have helped so much. Try them and see how they can help you! PS After these hip flexors get tight not only can your lower back hurt, but their tightness neurologically robs the glutes creating a greater muscle imbalance (weak butt and over tight quads) and and may contribute to even more problems with body mechanics. This leads to improper stress, wear and pain in knees, hips, ankles, feet, back and more!

Belmont, CA (PRWEB) November 16, 2011

Exercise is the key to staying strong, energetic and healthy—and it doesn’t end when a person reaches a certain age. SportZal, the highly regarded Belmont / Redwood City fitness center, knows that corrective fitness helps control symptoms of illness and joint pain in seniors, and can even help reverse some of the effects of aging. Seniors will not only feel better, they can often remain living independent longer.

Exercise also affects seniors’ minds and moods, according to the AARP. SportZal has announced specialized classes for Baby Boomers and prior generations. These courses will help participants head off or at least minimize the occurrence of common injuries, aches and pains, anxiety and stress.

“There is a myth that when you get older, especially when you have a chronic illnesses, you shouldn’t exercise, that you should save your energy for essential daily tasks,” said Galina Fedorova of SportZal. “But the opposite is true: you can’t afford not to keep moving. Seniors’ concerns about injuries from falls and strains are valid, but exercise will toughen up the body—and it’s all done under the watchful eyes of a corrective fitness specialist.”

The corrective fitness specialists at SportZal not only help seniors develop customized personal training programs post physical therapy in their studio in Belmont, but offer group classes at seniors assisted living places around SF Bay Area as well. Zumba Gold, a class geared towards those 55 years of age and older, is very popular now. This dance-fitness class still has all the fun elements of Zumba, including the zesty Latin music, exhilarating and easy-to-follow moves, and invigorating, party-like atmosphere. The exercises are simply modified so that the moves and pacing suit the needs of a more mature participant.

Other classes available to seniors at SportZal include:

Healing Yoga – Yoga helps seniors with a wide range of physical ailments, such as back pain and arthritis. It also benefits those recovering from illnesses and surgeries.

Balance and Stability Class – This course is designed to reduce the risk and fear of falling and boosts confidence by improving balance, posture and quality of walking.

Buddy Training – This exercise class pairs a senior parent with an adult child. It not only helps motivate both to participate, it helps the family members build stronger bonds, feel good about themselves, and reduce their stress.

Question by : Please help, back posture support brace question?
I’m trying to fix my poor posture. I bought a back brace yesterday and at first it felt great. It gave me a surprising confidence boost. Only problem is now I have neck pain from trying to keep this posture. If I suffer through the pain will it eventually go away, will my back get used to being straight?

If anyone knows any specific posture exercises, please share. I got a taste of what it’s like to have good posture, I really want this to be permanent and am willing to work on it everyday. So questions are 1. Should I continue to use this brace? and 2. Any exercises for posture would be really helpful?

Hi

It depends on what is the problem in the first place – sometimes, due to muscle imbalance, one might tend to slouch to one side, or in a forward tummy pouch droop. If it’s muscle imbalance and muscle weakness, you may need to strengthen your back extensors by doing back extension exercises. You can do this by lying on a hard surface on your tummy, and using your back, extend your back upwards. To make it more difficult, you can also raise up your hands and feet.

You also need to work on your core muscle strength, strengthen your stomach muscles too by doing sit ups and crunches.

You can consider swimming breast stroke or free style, which are fantastic overall exercise for you.

Also, determine if you have not so good postural habits e.g. slouching, using a heavy bag on just one side of the shoulder (better to use a backpack).

Lastly, you can consider seeing a physiotherapist to help you.

You need an MRI to check the discs in your back for herniation. You may be feeling sciatic pain if there’s pain at the top of your butt towards the side (either one side or both) or if you have pain traveling down your leg or into your low abdomen area. You really need an MRI and a doctor should absolutely be checking for things such as this, especially after a car accident. And don’t let any doctor lie to you, an X-ray and CT scan CANNOT show the discs and spinal cord nearly as well as an MRI. See an orthopedist and demand an MRI scan of the lumbar spine. (lower back).

Question by : What could help reduce or eliminate lower back pain in old people?
My grandmother has lately been having serious back pain, and we don’t know what to do anymore. She has been to a few doctors, and all they could’ve done was give pain killers which doesn’t help. Just now she was crying about it, and says that it’s her lower back that pains very badly, especially when she walks, and after walks. Her whole body has been going seriously downwards after she fell and splintered her hip bone which she received surgery on a year ago. Please, I need some serious advice that helps!

It might be the way she sleeps. If she sleeps on her back tell her to rest a pillow on her legs. If she rests on her stomach tell her to rest a pillow on her stomach. You have to get a fancy padding system if she sleeps on her side.

All of these should help alleviate the pain and straighten out her back when she is sleeping.
